Charmed at Chamscity

A Reporter’s Diary on 2014 JAMB UTME When Mr. Fabian Benjamin, the Public Relations Officer of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), called from Abuja, about two weeks to the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, to inform me that I had been selected as one of those to monitor the conduct of the exam in Lagos, I had no idea of what that would entail.  I had no idea of which centre I would be posted, to do the monitoring, although he had made me understand that further information on the matter would be communicated to me “in due course.” But when, some days to the exam, I got a letter from the Test Administration Department, routed through the Lagos office of JAMB at 11, Ojora Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, assigning me to my place of duty (Chamscity, 2A, Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja), and specifying my duties or responsibilities, it became clearer, to me, the kind of exam I was to monitor or supervise: Dual Based Test (DBT). For the benefit of those who don’t know, JAMB UTME is divided into three paper modes, depending on the candidate’s choice or luck. They are, namely: PPT (Paper and Pencil Test) for those who choose to do the exam, in the hard copy of both the question paper and answer sheet (as you must have discovered from reading Judex Okoro’s report on the opposite page, most of the examination malpractices being complained about in the conduct of JAMB UTME emanate from this area); DBT (Dual Based Test) for those candidates who prefer to read the questions online but shade the answers on the hard copy answer sheets provided for the purpose and CBT (Computer Based Test) – for candidates who prefer to read and shade in the answers online (this reporter understands from JAMB officials that result of this mode of exam could be sent to candidates via their mobile phones, within 20 or 30 minutes of  the end of the exam).
